Donald Trump, the frontrunner for the GOP candidacy in the 2016 presidential race, managed to poke at his closest rival, Jeb Bush, with some backhanded praise, criticizing the latter’s remarks regarding immigration.
Bush is currently in McAllen, Texas for a tour of the border, and has previously made comments pertaining to undocumented immigration in which he called it a “different kind of crime” and an “act of love.”
“Yes, they broke the law, but it’s not a felony. It’s an act of love, it’s an act of commitment to your family,” Bush told Fox News host Shannon Bream at an event last year.
On Monday, Trump stated, “I think it’s great he’s going to the border, I think he’ll … find out it’s not an act of love,” Trump told “Fox and Friends” on Monday morning. “I was down on the border. It’s rough, tough, stuff. This is not love, it’s other things going on.”
Trump recently revealed his vision for the future of American immigration, one that drastically reduced the H-1B visa program.
The Democratic National Convention was quick to denounce the Trump plan for immigration, and railed against the collective outlook the GOP has on the issue.
“Trump has reignited the GOP’s longstanding obsession with mass deportation,” said Pablo Manriquez, the DNC’s director of Hispanic media. “Like his fellow GOP candidates Jeb Bush, Scott Walker, Marco Rubio and others, GOP front-runner [T]rump dismisses a full and equal pathway to citizenship for hardworking immigrants.”
According to a CNN/ORC poll released on Aug. 18, Trump stands with the support of 24 percent of Republican registered voters. Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush is 11 points behind at 13 percent.
Trump is the biggest gainer in the poll, up 6 points since July according to the first nationwide CNN/ORC poll since the top candidates debated in Cleveland on Aug. 6.
