After becoming the third highest grosser ever in the history of Indian cinema, South Indian mega flick “Baahubali” seems to be heading towards another milestone. The film could be India’s official entry to the 88th Academy Awards.
The Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce has announced “Baahubali: The Beginning”, directed by SS Rajamouli, as its official entry for India’s Oscar shortlist.
The Oscar film selection panel headed by Amol Palekar will announce India’s official entry on September 25.
Released globally on July 10th, the Prabhas-Tamannaah starrer broke several records earning nearly Rs.600 crores in 50 days. It was released in multiple languages including Telugu, Tamil, Hindi and Malayalam. A sequel to the film named “Baahubali: The Conclusion” would be released in 2016.
Earlier, Kamal Haasan‘s “Swati Mutyam” was the Telugu film nominated for the oscars. This film was directed by K Viswanath and was released in 1986.
In 2015, Hindi film ‘Liar’s Dice’ was nominated as India’s official entry to the Oscar awards. This film starred Geetanjali Thapa and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the lead roles.
