With a steep increase in the use of smartphones in India, the number of internet users has grown rapidly. In the first half of this year, 52 million more users started to use the worldwide web, taking the total number to 352 million as of June 30, 2015.
In a statement, the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) said that over 60% (213 million) of the users accessed the internet through mobile devices.
“Internet (in India) has reached an inflection point. The consolidated numbers affirm the fact that internet in India has now become inclusive, which augurs well for the industry and society at large,” IAMAI said.
In October 2014, the number of users was 278 million and now it has increased to more than 26%. Meanwhile, the number of mobile internet users in India has grown about 40% from 159 million.
“The internet in India took more than a decade to move from 10 million to 100 million and three years from 100 to 200 million. However, it took only a year to move from 200 to 300 million users. Clearly, the internet is mainstream in India today,” IAMAI added.
