Indian actresses Freida Pinto and Priyanka Chopra will co-host an inspirational gala benefiting ‘Girl Rising India’, to be held at the National Building Museum in Washington, DC, on the eve of the International Day of the Girl, on October 10.
Girl Rising, a highly acclaimed film and international campaign to raise awareness about the importance of educating and valuing girls, is holding the gala in partnership with Global India Fund.
This event, with over 800 guests expected to attend, will represent an unprecedented opportunity for people in the US to support social change for girls across India, said a statement.
Dr. Amita N. Vyas, founder of Global India Fund, a DC-based philanthropic organization, said, in a statement, “The October gala will raise funds to ensure that the campaign will be distributed across schools, NGOs, and corporate partners throughout India, inspiring communities to imagine a better future for girls, and with concrete action plans”.
Vyas is also a professor at George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health.
The new India film ‘Girl Rising – Who Padhegi, Woh Udegi’, is a first-ever collaboration of Bollywood’s biggest stars, including Freida Pinto, Priyanka Chopra, Nandita Das, Madhuri Dixit, Sushmita Sen, Alia Bhatt, Parineeti Chopra, Kareena Kapoor and Amitabh Bachchan.
Translated as ‘She will learn, She will rise’, ‘Woh Padhegi, Woh Udegi’ is a Hindi version of the original 2013 film ‘Girl Rising’.
Championing the effort in India are Freida Pinto and Priyanka Chopra, who are both the producers of the new film and the ambassadors of the campaign.
“What makes Girl Rising so invaluable is the message of hope and positivity. It is the real life message set by these 9 supremely courageous young girls who fought the toughest odds to enrich their lives through education”, said Chopra.
Pinto said, “We aim to be disruptive with our ideas, swift with action and collaborative with our partners who share the same sentiment ‘the time is now’.”
