The Jersey City Board of Education voted last week not to close schools for the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, one of the most important holidays in the Islamic faith, much to the chagrin of local Muslim parents who advocated for the day off.
New Jersey school board members had originally proposed to close schools on Sept. 24, but some of the Jewish faith said they felt they were being discriminated against because they weren’t getting their own school days off for holidays like Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, according to NBC New York.
During a hearing on Sept. 17 to address the issue, Muslim community members nearly walked out in anger and frustration when it became clear they day off would not be awarded after nearly four hours of debate.
Board member Gerald Lyons claimed closing school with just six days’ notice would cause “undue hardship” for 5,000 to 10,000 parents who might not have anywhere else to send their kids.
“We feel alienated from the Board of Education, we feel alienated from this system,” said Omar Abouelkhair.
“We’re going to be the majority soon,” another said.
Meanwhile, a new report published by the Center for Immigration studies indicates Muslims are the fastest growing bloc of immigrants in the United States.
The report elaborates that some of the sending countries with the largest percentage increases in the number of immigrants living in the United States since 2010 were Saudi Arabia (up 93 percent); Bangladesh (up 37 percent); Iraq (up 36 percent); Egypt (up 25 percent); Pakistan, India, and Ethiopia (all up 24 percent); Nigeria and Ghana (both up 21 percent).
The countries with the largest increases in the number of immigrants living in the United States since 2010 were India (up 426,000), China (up 353,000), the Dominican Republic (up 119,000), El Salvador (up 101,000), Guatemala (up 85,000), Pakistan (up 72,000), Colombia (up 70,000), Cuba (up 68,000), Honduras (up 66,000), Iraq (up 57,000), and Bangladesh (up 56,000).
