At least 180 people have died as a result of earthquake on Monday.

A massive earthquake has hit Afghanistan, northern Pakistan and parts of India, taking a toll of at least 180 people around 2:45 pm on Monday.

The earthquake of magnitude 7.5 on the Richter scale was centred in the province of Badakhshan in the Hindu Kush mountain range in Afghanistan, around 240 km from Kabul. It was followed by another milder quake.
In Pakistan, the quake hit the capital of Islamabad, the cities of Lahore, Faisalabad and the mountainous region of Chitral, killing more than 147 people. Meanwhile, the death toll in Afganistan was 33. No death was reported in India as a result of the quake.

In India, the tremors shook the whole of northern part of the country including Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.

The quake affected telecom services in various parts of the region, and the Delhi metro has been halted. Shocked by the strong tremors, thousands of people ran out of their houses and high-rise buildings and gathered on streets.

Quick in response, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said on his Twitter update that, he has asked for an urgent assessment and that India is ready to provide assistance to Afghanistan & Pakistan.
