NEW YORK: India’s former opening batsman Virender Sehwag, who announced his retirement from international cricket last week, has joined the roster of the 3-match ‘Cricket All-Stars’ T20 series promoted by Sachin Tendulkar and Shane Warne, to be played at Citi Field in New York City (Nov. 7), Minute Maid Park in Houston (Nov. 11) and the Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles (Nov. 14).
Sehwag is the only cricketer in the glittering list of the ‘Cricket All-Stars’ who still plays domestic cricket.
Sehwag, undoubtedly India’s most dashing batsman ever, has been in spanking good form of late in the Ranji Trophy. There was speculation of him making a comeback to the India team, especially after Harbhajan Singh consolidated his place once again in the national team, for the T20 and one-dayers.
Playing for Haryana in this last season of his in India’s most popular domestic tournament, the Ranji Trophy, Sehwag scored a century against Karnataka in Mysore. Crowds have been gathering to see this iconic cricketer in action, for perhaps one last game.
Sehwag will also be seen in action at the Masters Champions League, featuring retired players, scheduled to be held in the UAE, in January, 2016.
Sehwag joining the retired players’ T20 championship games is akin to somebody like Roger Federer announcing his retirement from professional tennis, and then taking a decision to play the Grand Slams in the seniors’ section.
Tendulkar and Warne expressed their delight at Sehwag joining their pet event, which is set to be an annual fixture around the globe.
Tendulkar tweeted: Warm welcome to my friend & a batsman with his distinct style!@virendersehwag joins us at @T20AllStars #10DaystoGo
Warne tweeted: @virendersehwag Welcome to the #cricketallstars buddy !!!! See you in NY & congrats on a wonderful career champion
Ben Sturner, CEO of Leverage Agency, who is handling the marketing and promotion for the ‘Cricket All-Stars’ matches, in an interview to The American Bazaar, expressed his delight at Sehwag joining the roster.
“It’s a pleasure and honor to bring one of the most exciting cricketers in the world, and it (the roster) is truly the best of the best,” said Sturner, who added that a draw ceremony will take place next week in New York City to determine the Sachin’s Blasters and Warne’s Warriors teams, to be captained by Tendulkar and Warne.
Here is the updated list of players in order of their country caps, who will take the field for Sachin’s Blasters vs. Warne’s Warriors at the ‘Cricket All-Stars’ games:
