Pakistani cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan and his wife, British-Pakistani journalist Reham Khan, have filed a mutual petition for divorce after they decided to part away from their 10-month old marital relationship.
Imran Khan made the official announcement through his Facebook page where he wrote “This is a painful time for me, Reham, and our families. I would request everyone to respect our privacy. I have the greatest respect for Reham’s moral character and her passion to work for and help the underprivileged. Reports and speculation about financial settlements are absolutely false and shameful.”
Soon after the post of the ace cricketer, who lead the 1992 team that won the World Cup, Reham, through her Twitter page confirmed the news about the decision to part away with Imran. She wrote, “We have decided to part ways and file for divorce.”
Naeem Ul Haque, the Central Information Secretary of the political party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, of which Imran is the Chairman, wrote: “Chairman PTI Imran Khan and Reham Khan have decided to divorce by mutual consent. Due to the sensitivity and seriousness of this extremely painful matter it is requested that the media should refrain from any speculation. There will be no further communication in this respect.”
Imran tied a knot with the BBC weather anchor in January, which had, back then earned the wrath of conservative Muslims.
Imran, who was earlier married to Jemima Goldsmith, an English heiress, ended their 9-year old wedlock back in 2004. They have two children from that marriage.
Meanwhile, Reham Khan was earlier married to Ejaz Rehman, her first cousin and British psychiatrist, at the age of 19 but she ended the relationship over alleged domestic violence. She has three children who currently stay with her.
