An Indian American academician has been named dean of the Henry Samuel School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of California, Los Angeles.
Jayathi Murthy currently serves as chair of UT-Austin’s Cockrell School’s Department of Mechanical Engineering, but will take her expertise to the west coast at the turn of the new year.
Murthy joined the Cockrell School in 2012 and became the first woman to head the mechanical engineering department at the University of Texas at Austin.
Prior to joining UT-Austin, Murthy held engineering faculty positions at Purdue University and Carnegie Mellon University, according to her University of Texas faculty page, and has authored more than 275 technical papers and reports.
She also serves as the Director of PRISM, a $21 million National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) facility geared for Prediction of Reliability, Integrity and Survivability of Microsystems.
Her research interests lie in computational heat transfer and fluid mechanics, “with an emphasis on the development of unstructured, solution-adaptive finite volume methods for industrial applications. More recently, her work has focused on the analysis of micro scale heat transfer, particularly in emerging microelectronics applications.”
