Karnataka is the most preferred state by foreign students in India, according to a report prepared by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
According to the Annual Status of Higher Education 2015, prepared by CII and Deloitte with the help of Human Resource Development ministry, Karnataka stands on top by attracting 13241 foreign students, which constitutes around 38.08% of total foreign students studying in India, followed by Tamil Nadu (4401) and Maharashtra (3888).
The report says that there are 34774 foreign students pursuing their studies in India and around 45% of them are women.
As per the report, Karnataka has 44 colleges per lakh population when Indian average is only 25 colleges per lakh population. But average enrolment per college in Karnataka is only 436, which is much lower when compared to Indian average of 715.
In terms of number of public universities, Karnataka ranks first with 25 public universities functioning in the state. With 45 universities, the state ranks fourth in terms of number of universities, followed by Uttar Pradesh (59), Tamil Nadu (56), and Rajasthan (47).
The state has the highest number of agricultural universities (5), the highest number of law universities (2) and the highest number of medical universities (6).
Karnataka ranks fourth highest on number of general universities with 22 universities following Uttar Pradesh (36), Rajasthan (31), Tamil Nadu (30). The number of degree-granting institutions in Karnataka is 44.
With 3205 colleges has a share of 9.02% of all colleges in India and ranks third on total number of colleges in any state in India, the report says.
In terms of gender, enrolment is skewed as 53.0% comprises males, while only 47.0% of the enrolment is females, indicating gender disparity.
The Pupil-Teacher-Ratio (PTR) of colleges in Karnataka is 10.1 students per teacher, which is higher than the all-India average of 14.9.
The total number of teaching staff and non-teaching staff in all colleges in Karnataka is estimated to be 1.39 lakhs and 0.98 lakhs, respectively. But the ratio of teachers per college and non-teaching staff per college are 43.3 and 30.7, respectively, which is lower when compared to all India average of 47.9 and 32.9.
