In a shocking incident, an Indian merchant navy officer, Dhruvkant Vimal Thakur, killed his wife and her lover at their home in a residential society in Navi Mumbai, on Wednesday. The officer and his wife were estranged and living separately for some months.
The 29-year-old officer came out of their residence with blood-stained clothes and confessed that he had killed his wife and her lover. Police arrested Thakur.
The police have found that he had recorded his confession, before a failed attempt to hang himself.
Thakur and his wife, Sushmita, had developed their relationship over WhatsApp and got married five years ago. They started to live in Sector 19 in Kamothe after marriage, but problems plagued their marriage early on.
They used to quarrel often and Sushmita left the house seven months ago. She developed a relationship with one Ajay Kumar Singh and was planning to get married to him.
Thakur’s sister Ranjana Jha was taken by surprise when Sushmita demanded divorced from Thakur, as she and the family were not aware of the problems in his personal life.
“After he returned, Susmita just handed him the divorce papers through her advocate, saying she was in love with someone else and wanted to marry him. My brother was so much in love with her, he agreed to sign the divorce papers so she would be happy,” Thakur’s sister Ranjana was quoted as saying by NDTV.
The incident happened when Sushmita came to Thakur’s home along with Ajay Kumar Singh to get the divorce papers signed by him. They were not aware that Thakur was already in the flat.
Thakur got angry when Singh showed him intimate photos of himself with Sushmita and cut his throat several times with a knife and choked Sushmita to death with a pillow.
Kamal Singh, the watchman of the building, told Tehelka, “Sushmita had left seven months ago and when she and Ajay went into the flat they were unaware that Dhruvkant was already in the flat.”
After the incident, the killer tried to hang himself from a ceiling fan, which failed as the tie he used broke. Then he called his sister and confessed to the murders. She informed the police and the police came to his flat and arrested him.
Thakur was charged with murder under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code.
