A 26-year-old woman was shattered when she opened her e-mail box. There was a talaq notice sent by her husband who wanted to dissolve their four-month-old marriage because she was ‘dark-skinned’ in complexion.
The incident happened just three days after she told him that she was pregnant.
The woman, who works as a research assistant at a Noida-based pharma company, has filed a police complaint against her husband, who is a software engineer based in Bengaluru, for discriminating against her on the basis of the color of her skin. According to the complaint filed by the woman, she has been facing humiliation since their marriage.
On the other hand, the husband has a different version which says he had given talaq as the complainant suffered from severe health issues, which her family had kept hidden before their marriage. But this claim was brushed aside by the woman.
Their families met through an online matrimonial website in March and soon after their wedding both left for Bengaluru, where the man was working.
“From the start, he was indifferent to me and, on several occasions, verbally abused and slapped me,” the woman said, reported The Times of India.
In November, she moved back to Noida to re-join work.
“His family saw me before marriage. If he had a problem with the colour of my skin, he should have refused to marry me,” she said.
“The decision might have been taken in a fit of rage. I will urge him to reconsider,” said the father of the techie, but it seems like his words have made little impact on the decision of his son as he is stubborn and is ready for a legal battle.
According to the girl’s father, the only health issue that she has is an allergy to dust. He added that “She had complained to us several times about his behavior.”
The case has been filed in the Gautam Budh Nagar police station on the request of the girl’s family to the station chief Kiran S on Tuesday, after the women’s police refused to file a complaint.
Narendree Saini, SHO of the women’s police station in Sector 39, said Sana had visited them on Sunday. “We contacted her husband and asked for a meeting. He refused to come to Noida. She had also not decided where to register a complaint. We will register a dowry harassment case when we receive the complaint.”
