On the third anniversary of the Nirbhaya gang-rape and murder case, the mother of the victim publicly revealed her daughter’s name for the first time and said that there was no shame in doing so.
“My daughter was Jyoti Singh and I am not ashamed to name her,” said Nirbhaya’s mother Asha Singh at a public gathering in Delhi’s Jantar Mantar for paying homage to Nirbhaya, on Wednesday.
“Whoever has suffered should not hide their name. It is the offenders who should be ashamed and hide their name. I want to tell everyone that my daughter’s name was Jyoti Singh. From today, everyone should know her as Jyoti Singh,” Nirbhaya’s mother said.
Actress Shabana Azmi, who attended the meet said, “They (Jyoti’s parents) have changed rape discourse in the country. We need to ‘shift the blame, shift the shame’.”
Six individuals, including a juvenile, sexually assaulted the 23-year-old paramedical student in a moving bus in south Delhi on December 16, 2012.
Nirbhaya, a name given to her by the media in India, was returning after watching a movie, with a friend of hers. Her friend was also attacked brutally and subdued on the bus by the men. The victims were later thrown out of the bus. Nirbhaya later died of the injuries she sustained in that attack.
All the accused were arrested and charged with sexual assault and murder. One of the accused, Ram Singh, committed suicide in jail. The minor was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment in a reform home while the other four men were sentenced to death by hanging.
Speaking of the juvenile who is expected to release on December 19, Asha Singh said, “On her third anniversary, the culprit is being set free. Where is the justice is in that?”
In Parliament, BJP MP and actress Hema Malini opined that, “The juvenile did more harm than the others. He has a devilish mind. He will not be corrected in rehabilitation. He should be punished so that everyone fears the law of the country.”
