Mosques in America continue to be a target of attacks by racists and white supremacists.
Days after a mosque in Las Vegas was vandalized by an unidentified man who put bacon on the handles of the door of the house of worship, a similar incident has occurred in Florida.
A man with a machete vandalized a Brevard County mosque and left pork at the front door of the building, according to police. The Islamic Society of Central Florida’s Masjid Al-Munin at 1011 South Washington Avenue in Titusville was vandalized Friday night, said reports.
Surveillance video shows a man entering the mosque’s carport late at night when no one was there and using a machete to smash cameras, lights and windows, reported Tampabay.com.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that a man can be seen in a surveillance video putting bacon on the door handles to the entrances of the Masjid-e-Tawheed mosque. The FBI had in that case declared a reward of $5,000 for information leading to the arrest of the culprit.
Earlier in December, a severed pig’s head was found outside a Philadelphia worship site. Also, a mosque in Connecticut was shot at, and a man arrested for vandalizing a mosque in Florida last month.
Pork is prohibited in Islam, a faith followed by 1.6 billion people worldwide.
“We’ll be asking state and federal investigators to investigate this as a hate crime,” said Ibrahim Hooper, the national communications director for the Council on American-Islamic Relations, the nation’s largest Muslim advocacy group, based in Washington.
