Resul Pookutty, the Oscar winning sound designer from India, has received two nominations for best Motion Picture Sound Editor at the 63rd annual Golden Reel Awards for the films “Unfreedom” and “India’s Daughters”, which are banned in India.
Pookutty, who won Oscar in 2009 for the movie Slumdog Millionaire, acknowledged the news about his nomination via twitter.
“Two nominations at #MPSE is a rare feat! I thank my crew and my fraternity for allowing me to grow and standing as the greatest support system,” Pookutty tweeted.
Pookutty also wrote that he dedicates the nominations to Nirbhaya, the victim of the brutal gangrape that took place in a moving bus in Delhi on December 16, 2012.
“I dedicate my nominations at the 63rd Golden Reel Award to the soul of Jyoti of Nirbhaya case, truly the #India’sDaughter,” he wrote on Twitter. “India’s Daughter” is a documentary directed by Leslee Udwin about the rape and murder of a 23-year-old physiotherapy student. The documentary was banned in India due to the interview with the convicts of the murder case. The documentary had received nomination in the Television – Short Form, Documentary category
On the other hand, “Unfreedom”, a movie based on homosexuality, was nominated to the Golden Reel for the Feature Film – Foreign Film, Sound Effects, Foley, Dialogue & ADR category. “Unfreedom”, directed by Raj Amit Kumar was banned in India after the sensor board found a few scenes in the movie sexually provocative.
“Mad Max: Fury Road”, “The Martian”, “The Revenant” and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” lead the way on the film side with three nominations apiece. HBO’s hit show “Game of Thrones” came out on top in the TV categories with a trio of mentions as well.
Winners will be announced on February 27.
