The body of a man found in a Sacramento, California river, on Monday, was confirmed Tuesday to be that of Prasad Moparti, 55, who had disappeared on Feb. 13, after he attended his daughter’s wedding reception and went out for a walk.
The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department reported finding the body in Steamboat Slough, about five miles south of Grand Island Mansion, where Moparti’s daughter’s wedding was held on Feb. 13, according to The Sacramento Bee.
The Los Angeles Times reported a boater reported a body floating in the river. The Times reported that the coroner’s office confirmed on Tuesday that the body was that of Moparti.
Deputies went to the slough about 2:30 p.m. Monday, responding to a report from a boater.
Authorities said Moparti had disappeared within hours of his daughter’s wedding. In the days leading up to the ceremony, he had started taking long walks while visiting his daughter in Los Angeles, family members said, reported the Bee.
Family members described Moparti as an avid walker and said he manages apartments in Hyderabad. He danced at a party Friday and enjoyed the ceremonySaturday.
Authorities said immediately after he disappeared that there were no suspicious circumstances or foul play. The search for him was called off after 72 hours.
Moparti was considered to be a “voluntary missing person” but that he was not familiar with the area.
The Times reported family members told Sacramento County sheriff’s officials that Moparti suffered from depression and that he had showed signs of depression leading up to the wedding. He had arrived from India in January.
At the time he went missing, his daughter, Durga Moparti, 29, who got married to Rajesh Gutta, on Feb. 13, told Fox40-TV that family members saw him walking down a road and believed he was going for a casual walk. She said he had been participating in wedding activities and appeared to be happy, the news station reported.
“Our dad was really very happy. He was dancing. He was really joyful,” she told reporters hours before the search was called off.
Last Tuesday, Durga Moparti said that she could not comprehend a scenario in which her father would vanish.
“The only indication that we had was that he had been idle” since arriving in the U.S., she said, reported the Bee. “He was a workaholic back in India and was managing several projects. He was bored.”
Durga Moparti told the station KVOR: “It sounded like he was a little…depressed, and he wanted to go back to India.”
