YouTube is the new study desk of expert doctors who learn new surgical techniques through online streaming says a new research conducted scientists including an Indian origin researcher.
According to the team of scientists, they surveyed members of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFORS) and came to the understanding that a large number of expert doctors use different online streaming services such as YouTube to learn new techniques in the surgical process and the most widely used once so that they can keep themselves updated with international standards.
Anitha Sethna from Emory Univeristy’s School of Medicine, Atlanta and the other members of the research team surveyed the members of AAFPRS and collected 202 responses.
According to the findings received from the survey, doctors stay updated regarding the latest surgical procedures through both online and offline means such as meetings, journals, and discussions with colleagues.
Sethna and authors wrote in an article published online by JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery said: “However, 64.1 percent of respondents said they had used online media at least once to learn a new technique, especially for rhinoplasty and injectable procedures and 83.1 percent had used those techniques in their practice.”
The research also says that relatively new doctors tend to use the online streaming more than the experienced surgeons.
“The enthusiasm is not unbridled, however. The internet’s ease of access has raised concerns regarding the quality of these sources,” the authors noted.
