Mallya has more assets in foreign countries than in India.

The beleaguered Indian business tycoon Vijay Mallya, who left India when a consortium of 17 banks moved the Debt Recovery Tribunal (DRT) for recovering a loan of $1.4 billion due to them, has many luxurious properties across the world in his name.
Mallya’s expensive real estate properties range from a bungalow on Napean Sea Road, South Mumbai to a mansion in Northern California’s Napa Valley, according to Mint. Interestingly, most of his assets are situated in foreign countries.
Here are some of Mallya’s properties:
Trump Plaza Condo, New York: In September 2010, Mallya bought a penthouse in Trump Plaza for $2.4 million. The 37-story residential tower is considered one of the most expensive residential complex in New York. His neighbors in the tower include businessman Donald Trump, the GOP frontrunner for nomination for the presidential election, actor Bruce Willis, singer Beyonce and Tony Embry.
Sausalito, California: Mallya purchased this property in 1987 for $1.2 million. He purchased this bungalow when doctors advised staying there as his wife experienced some complications related to pregnancy when they visited California. The 11,000 square foot property is one of the most expensive ones in California. His neighbors include Tiger Woods, Serena Williams and Venus Williams.
Clifton Estate, Cape Town: This mansion in Cape Town is located on Nettleton Road. Mallya purchased this property in 2008 for $8.4 million. Some of the earlier residents of this house include Prince Carl Philip of Sweden, singer George Michael and actor Nicholas Cage.
Le Grande Jardin, France: This property is on “the Island of Sainte-Marguerite. Mallya bought this luxurious property in 2008. The price was approximate $53 to $61 million.
Mabula Game Lodge, Johannesburg, South Africa: Mallya has 99.5 percent share in this game reserve located near Johannesburg. He bought the shares in the 1990s paying $6 million. Spread over 25,000-acre, it is considered as one of the best game reserves in South Africa.
Along with all these exquisite properties, Mallya also owns a mansion in Hertfordshire, England, and a castle in Perthshire, Scotland.
