Motorists in Hyderabad beware: parking vehicle in a wrong place may not only result in the vehicle being towed away, it could also put them behind bars as the city traffic police have changed the rules of parking.
According to the startling new norms, those who park their vehicles in wrong places or found parking either ‘dangerously’ or ‘obstructively’ within the city more than three times in a row will be prosecuted and may ultimately be sent to jail.
“We have decided to crack the whip on people who pay no heed to the safety of other road-users and park anywhere they wish,” said additional commissioner of police (traffic) Jitender, according to The Indian Express.
He said that increasing number of road accidents due to wrong and dangerous parking have led to the decision.
He also said that strict punishment will be taken against those repeatedly resorting to over-speeding, racing, jumping signals and cell phone driving.
“So far we have been issuing challans to such offenders. But here on, we will file charge sheets and seek imprisonment from courts,” Jitender added.
As the city is facing severe parking space crisis, people even resort to park their vehicles in ‘no parking’ places. At present only a nominal fine between $3 to $15 is charged for wrong or illegal parking. Almost two lakh motorists are fined in the city every month for wrong parking.
