A day after 26-year-old model Priyanka Kapoor committed suicide in Delhi, the police arrested her husband Nitin Chawla, on Sunday, on charges of dowry harassment.
In the suicide note found from Kapoor’s room, which is believed to have been written by her, she has alleged that Chawla used to harass and beat her for dowry.
Kapoor, a model, who ran an event management firm in Delhi, was found hanging from a ceiling fan at their house in Defense Colony on Saturday.
“The police got a call from Priyanka’s family member and reached the spot. Priyanka’s mother and husband were standing outside the room which was locked from inside. Police broke open the door in their presence with members of the fire brigade. Priyanka was found hanging from the ceiling fan. She was shifted to AIIMS, where the doctor declared her brought dead,” a Delhi police official told Mail Today.
Kapoor’s family has also alleged that Chawla used to beat and harass her for dowry.
“Priyanka wrote in her suicide note: ‘Nitin wanted me to leave his house, so I am leaving the world’. She also wrote that Nitin used to hit her over petty issues. He also stopped her from going to pubs and bars several times. When Nitin’s 10-year-old son from his earlier marriage came home, Nitin had an argument with Priyanka. He asked her to leave the house,” a police officer told Mail Today.
“I have known grief, I have known happiness…sadness and emotions…but my husband made me helpless for the first time,” she wrote on the suicide note.
Kapoor has also alleged that Chawla didn’t like her lifestyle and told her to leave the house.
A case has been registered against Nitin Chawla, a Delhi-based businessman, under sections 498A, 304B, 34 of Indian Penal Code.
Kapoor was the second wife of Chawla who has a son and a daughter with his first wife. The body of Kapoor has been sent to All India Institute of Medical Science for postmortem examination.
