In the largest action of its kind by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, a total of 306 Indian students on F-1 visa, who were enrolled in a ‘fake’ university in New Jersey – University of Northern New Jersey (UNNJ) – which was in reality a sting operation by federal authorities, will be deported soon as they are now in removal proceedings.
According to USCIS officials, the 306 students were identified, located and are now in removal proceedings, to be deported back to India.
“The 306 individuals from India who were purported students at the University of Northern New Jersey have been identified, located and placed in the immigration process for removal in accordance to proper due process,” Alvin Phillips, spokesman, USICS Homeland Security Investigations, was quoted as saying by PTI.
As reported earlier by The American Bazaar, in one of the biggest roundup in a student visa scam, 21 brokers, recruiters and employers – most or all of them of Indian Americans and Chinese Americans – from across the United States who allegedly conspired with more than 1,000 foreign nationals to fraudulently maintain student visas and obtain foreign worker visas through the “pay to stay” New Jersey college were arrested last Tuesday by federal agents.

The defendants, including 10 Indian Americans, were arrested in New Jersey and Washington by special agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and charged in 14 complaints with conspiracy to commit visa fraud, conspiracy to harbor aliens for profit and other offenses.
According to the complaints, the defendants, many of whom operated recruiting companies for purported international students, were arrested for their involvement in an alleged scheme to enroll foreign nationals as students in the UNNJ, a purported for-profit college located in Cranford, New Jersey. Unbeknownst to the defendants and the foreign nationals they conspired with, however, the fake institution was created in September 2013 by federal agents.
The UNNJ was not staffed with instructors or educators, had no curriculum and conducted no actual classes or education activities. The UNNJ operated solely as a storefront location with small offices staffed by federal agents posing as school administrators.
