The Maryland Cricket Premier League (MCPL) will stage “Rang aur Patang Utsav 2016” in Germantown, MD, on April 24.
The family-friendly event is slated to be an eclectic celebration of various cultures and will feature a kite festival, Holi colors, food, and even a moon bounce, according to Bijal Shah, one of the organizers.
It will be held at 17920 Germantown Park Drive Picnic Area in Germantown, MD.
It is a “free entry” event with free parking, Shah said.
MCPL is hosting the event, in partnership with Montgomery Parks and SVP DJ Events.
Since 2010, the MCPL has focused on promoting cricket in the state of Maryland and surrounding D.C.-metro areas by staging a tournament each spring.
The MCPL’s annual tournament is expected to draw significantly more participation than years past, bolstered by active social media promotion and partnerships with entities such as the American Diversity Group, Shah said.
While the league only had a few teams under its roster when it was initially conceived six years ago, it has grown to sustain more than 20 different teams and 500 members.
As of publication, 26 teams are registered to compete, with monikers such as the “Baltimore Wolves,” the “Desi Lions,” and the “Germantown Tigers.”
On Saturday, April 9 the MCPL staged its 2016 tournament openers, with six matches taking place at Apple Ridge Ballfield in Montgomery Village, MD, beginning at 8:30 a.m. and stretching into the afternoon.
Future MCPL venues will include Morris Park and Strawberry Knoll Field, both in Gaithersburg, MD, and Spencerville Local Park in Spencerville, MD.
