A 26-year-old Indian American man who fatally stabbed his grandmother at the North Bergen, New Jersey home where they lived with other members of an extended family has been charged with murder, authorities said.
Ramila Patel, age 73, was found suffering from multiple stab wounds to her torso at 7 a.m. last Wednesday after township police were called to her 9th Street home “on a report of a disturbance,” Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said in a statement. She was pronounced dead about an hour later at the Jersey City Medical Center, the prosecutor said, reported NorthJersey.com.
Jaydeep Patel, her grandson, was in custody on Thursday after being charged with murder, possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes and unlawful possession of a weapon, authorities said. He had not had a first hearing as of Thursday night and authorities declined to say where he was being held.
The incident shocked neighbors. One neighbor said that Patel, a graduate of Stevens Institute of Technology, was generally happy and outgoing, and lovingly maintained an old car that belonged to his father, who died two years ago, because of fond memories it held for him.
NJ Advanced Media reported alleged murderer was an engineer, did not have a girlfriend, who lived with his grandmother and mother, and spoke often of how much he loved his father, who had died of a heart attack about two years ago.
“Never did I think in my mind that he would do what he did,” the neighbor, Hector Millet, said of the alleged stabbing, according to NorthJersey.com. “It breaks my heart to think what pushed him to that.”
Millet told NJ Advanced Media: “The kid, he used to come here all the time since I got Parkinson’s dystonia. He used to tell me how to eat better. He used to talk to me about his future… He was a happy-going kid. He was always happy. Never in my mind did I think that something like that was going to happen. He loved computers. We would talk about computers. We would talk about religion,” he added.
Other neighbors said Jaydeep Patel recently had verbal fights with his mother, reported NorthJersey.com. One woman, who declined to give her name, said the grandmother had wanted them to move out because the fighting “made her life miserable.” Neighbors said the dead woman was Jaydeep Patel’s paternal grandmother.
Jaydeep Patel was taken out of the house in handcuffs on Wednesday morning, neighbors said, and his grandmother was taken out by stretcher and placed in an ambulance. One neighbor said the mother had told her that she screamed when she found her mother-in-law on the floor bleeding.
Neighbors said Jaydeep Patel and his mother had a verbal argument on Tuesday, the day before the alleged stabbing, and that police were briefly at the family’s home at 1316 9th Street that day.
One man said Jaydeep Patel idolized his father, who was an artist known for floral still life drawings, and enjoyed talking about museums, theater, history and music. He said Jaydeep had complained about his job with an electronics company in Bergen County because he was being given more responsibility for the same pay. He said he did not know the name of the company.
“It’s a tragic shock,” said the man, who declined to give his name. “I never expected him to do such a thing. … This is the worst thing, crime-wise, that has happened on this street.”

Micro murders within communities; macro murders, mass rape, pillage and plunder across borders; total disregard for the life of people in countries that America seeks to destroy so wantonly for greed and geo-political hegemony. American political establishment believes that America is safe within its borders! Benighted fools! Wars and destruction that America plots on other countries give the message to its own people that life is cheap and dispensable as we see from the spate of wanton wastage of human life inside America. Tightest gun control laws will not stop murderous rampages. The message from the American political establishment is: life is cheap. Destroy it.
