As the Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to address an election rally in Puducherry on Tuesday, the party leader and former union minister V Narayanasamy received an anonymous letter threatening to kill Gandhi, reported Press Trust of India.
Narayanasamy said that he received an unsigned letter written in Tamil, threatening to kill him and Gandhi at his Puducherry residence on May 5.
“Your party is responsible for the closure of industries in Puducherry. We will attack you and your former Prime Minister’s son and be blasted while attending a meeting,” the letter said.
Narayanasamy said that he has filed a complaint with the police and informed the party high command about the threat.
Considering the seriousness of the threat, a group of top Congress leaders met Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and requested to strengthen the security of Gandhi.
After the meeting, Congress leaders said that Rajnath Singh had assured to beef up the security of the congress leader.
“The Home Minister has assured prompt action and security enhancement. He has also assured us that the agencies of Centre and states and SPG will be alerted to the threat that has been received,” Congress Deputy Leader in Rajya Sabha Anand Sharma was quoted as saying by PTI.
Top political leaders including the Prime Minister are guarded by Special Protection Group (SPG). Rajnath Singh has ordered the Intelligence Bureau and SPG to be extra cautious.
Rahul Gandhi’s father and former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated during a public function in Sriperumbudur near Chennai in Tamil Nadu on May 21, 1991.
Rahul Gandhi will attend a political rally on Tuesday at Karaikal in Puducherry, which goes to vote on May 16.
