Next version of Android operating system could be named after a Malayali dish.
There is a campaign going on across the country to get the upcoming version of Android named neyyappam, a traditional Kerala sweet.
Arun Kumar, a Bengaluru-based techie, had even created a website and Twitter handle to promote neyyappam.
A sweet rice-based fritter, neyyappam is made of jaggery, coconut and ghee.
Google has created a micro-site to accept suggestions to name the N-version of Android operating system. The condition of Google is that the suggestion should be the name of a sweet. All previous names of Android were desserts.
Cupcake was the name of the first Android version and it was followed by Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean, KitKat, Lollipop and the latest Marshmallow. Now it is the turn of alphabet N.
Noodles, nuts and nachos are also contesting with neyyappam to become the official name of Android.
Expectations are high as the India-born CEO of Google Sundar Pichai has said that if suitable names were there, next version of Android could have an Indian name.
Twitterati has started a campaign with hashtag #NforNeyyappam to reach out to maximum people.
Kerala tourism department is also taking the effort to promote Neyyappam. “With a little bit of your help we can name the next Android version Neyyappam,” Kerala tourism department tweeted.
“Neyyappam is a better choice than Nutella. It is a sweet and stylish name,” Bengaluru-based engineer Ashok Raj was quoted as saying by The Hindu.
“Hi @sundarpichai, we Malayalees want #AndroidN to be named after our delicacy #Neyyappam. Hope you’ll keep your promise #AndroidNeyyappam,” tweeted GK @krishnajgd.
“MaIayalees…Now it’s the time to prove our Strength Neyyappam or nothing,” tweeted Akash Raj.
Another person who goes by the handle Sachin tweeted, “Future talks be like, “Did you get the Neyyappam Update Bro?”
Some even have written Malayalam poems based on neyyappam.
The voting for names will close at 12:29 p.m. June 9. Google will take the decision thereafter.
