The mentally deranged or perhaps cold blooded killer Mainak Sarkar, 38, a former doctoral student at UCLA, shot dead his ex-wife Ashley Hasti, 31, in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, before driving down to the UCLA campus to murder his former thesis adviser professor William Klug, 39, before committing suicide, on Wednesday.
Sarkar had a ‘Kill List’ at home, in which the name of another professor at UCLA – a male whose identity has not yet been revealed – was also there, apart from those of Hasti and Klug, according to police.
Reports say Sarkar couldn’t find the other professor who he had on the list. After he shot dead Hasti at her home, he then drove to UCLA with two semiautomatic guns with him.
WCCO-TV reported Sarkar and Hasto got married in 2011. there were no details when they got divorced. Heavy reported that Hasti was Sarkar’s ex-girlfriend.
According to Everipedia, Hasti was a resident physician at the University of Minnesota. She was previously a former tutor at North Hennepin Community College.
Her body was discovered on June 1 when police ordered a “welfare check” after discovering Sarkar’s body at UCLA. Authorities reported that her body had appeared deceased for at least a couple of days.
Sarkar and Hasti had dated around 2011, while they both lived in Los Angeles. Hasti earned a degree in premed studies from Scripps College in Claremont, California, in 2010. She also held an undergraduate degree from the University of Minnesota – Minneapolis. Hasti previously worked as a tutor at North Hennepin Community College in Minnesota from 2011 to 2012.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Sarkar called Klug a “very sick person” in a since-deleted blog post, writing that he could not be trusted. Klug had been Sarkar’s adviser at the UCLA engineering school and he “expressed gratitude to Klug for his help and support” in a 2013 doctoral dissertation, the newspaper reports.
Detectives who responded to the UCLA shooting reportedly found a note from Sarkar asking someone to “check on my cat.” When police searched Sarkar’s home in Minnesota, they reportedly recovered the list, which led them to Hasti’s home.
