Social networking giant Facebook rolled out its updated suicide prevention tools globally, simplifying the process for worried users to flag posts by friends who may be considering harming themselves.
These tools were first launched in the US last year with the help of Forefront, Lifeline, and Save.org. In India, the tool works in collaboration with AASRA and Deepika Padukone’s The Live Love Laugh Foundation.
“We’re updating the resources we offer to people around the world who may be experiencing self-injury or suicidal thoughts, as well as the support we offer to their concerned friends and family members,” Antigone Davis, Global Head of Safety and Jennifer Guadagno, Researcher at Facebook posted Tuesday.
“We are rolling them out around the world in collaboration with local partners and in all languages Facebook available in,” they added.
The post also says that the Facebook suicide prevention tools will enable users to take action themselves or report posts to Facebook that they believe might indicate suicidal behavior. Users can either reach out to people they are concerned about directly or report the post to Facebook, which review teams working all time.
Recently Varun Malik, a 32-year-old man from Gurgaon, Haryana was saved by his friends and the police after he posted suicide attempt pictures on Facebook.
Varun, who works in a multinational company, tried to commit suicide by cutting his wrist and uploaded the pictures on Facebook. He was rushed to a private hospital where doctors said his condition was stable.
