A college professor working at Mysore University was arrested and sent to jail for insulting Lord Rama. Professor B P Mahesh Chandra Guru, who was accused of making derogatory comments against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani was sent to three-day judicial custody.
Guru was arrested on Friday when he appeared before a court in connection with the case. A judicial first class magistrate in Bengaluru rejected his bail plea on Monday citing that there were other cases registered against him on the complaint of the Akhila Karnataka Dr. Ambedkar Prachara Samiti for his insulting comments against Modi and Irani, reported The Hindustan Times.
According to the police, Guru allegedly insulted Lord Rama at a function held in January last year, saying the God was unfair to Sita. Karnadu Sarvodaya Sena filed a complaint against him following his remark.
In January this year, Guru had allegedly raised insulting comments against Modi and Irani at a function held to condole the death of Rohith Vemula, the research scholar who committed suicide at the University of Hyderabad.
According to media reports, the professor described Irani as a “third-rate actress unworthy of being the HRD minister.” A case was registered against him for these remarks in January.
The Mysore University is considering suspending Guru who is a journalism professor known for his outspoken behavior. The university syndicate convened a meeting on Tuesday to decide on the issue.
