The Supreme Court of India will hear next Wednesday a petition seeking a ban on WhatsApp and Viber on the ground that they pose a major threat to national security.
The Public Interest Litigation has been filed by Sudhir Yadav, a Haryana- based RTI activist, who urged the apex court to examine the matter thoroughly.
In his petition, Yadav claimed that the messaging platform’s end-to-end encryption gives terrorists a means of communication that is impossible to intercept.
Such apps- including Whatsapp, Viber, Telegram, Hike and Signal – were thus a threat to national security and should be banned, the petition said.
Yadav, 27, told to news agencies that he had written letters to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and the ministry of communication and IT before filing the petition, but received no reply.
