A 24-year-old woman, working in the IT major Infosys, was stabbed to death on Friday morning at Nungambakkam Railway station by a man who had allegedly stalked her for months.
The victim, identified as S Swathi, was on her way to office and was waiting for her daily train to work at around 6.45 am when the attacker allegedly approached her.
Witnesses have told the police that the man came up to her and after a heated argument, attacked her with a sickle he was carrying in a bag.
Swathi was left to bleed to death with several cut injuries on her face and neck on the railway platform, which is frequented thousands of passengers every day.
Staff of a few stalls at the station heard cries and rushed to the spot but the attacker had fled.
There are no CCTV cameras at the station which makes the police clueless about the attacker.
It’s a routine for Swathi to take the suburban train to reach her workplace at Mahindra Tech Park. On return from work, she usually takes the bus drop offered by the company.
Usually her father Santhana Gopalakrishnan, a retired Central government employee, drops her in the station, but he did not accompany her today.
Infosys in a statement expressed condolences, “We are saddened by the unfortunate incident that has led to the demise of our employee in Chennai. We are working with the local authorities as they investigate the matter and will continue to provide our co-operation and support. Our deepest sympathies and prayers are with the family of the deceased. Infosys will provide all the necessary support to the family in their hour of grief,” a spokesperson of the company said.
Only on Wednesday, an advocate was hacked to death in broad-day light at Vyasarpadi in Chennai.
