Google has rolled out an update for its Hangout app, allowing android users to record and send video messages.
The latest Hangouts v11.0 update will be compatible with both Android and iOS platforms.
The video messaging feature was brought to Google Hangout for iOS in February 2014.
Earlier this year, Google increased the duration limit on video from 10 seconds to 1 minute and the latest update further increases the duration limit to 2 minutes on iOS. However, the feature has been introduced to android users with a one minute limit.
Other changes common to updated Android and iOS apps of Google Hangouts include the ability to throw out users from group conversations. On Android, Google has also removed the ability to display SMS and IM messages in a single conversation as ‘merged conversations’.
In their support page, Google explained the change by saying, “Merged conversations used to let you see your Hangouts messages and text messages in the same conversation. We have decided to remove it, because it caused user confusion and had low usage.”
“However, the users will not lose any of the messages sent and can see them right there in Hangouts, the page says.
On iOS, this update also gets a fix for static gifs and square cropping of images.
