Social Networking giant Facebook and US television network ABC are partnering on a 24-hour digital coverage of both the Democratic and Republican National Conventions.
The Republican Convention started in Cleveland, Ohio on Monday night and will run Thursday while the DNC is set for July 25-28 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Apart from just reusing TV programming online, there will be in-depth coverage that wouldn’t be practical in conventional broadcasting. Your comments and questions on Facebook will also influence the coverage, variety.com reported on Monday.
Earlier, CBS News has cut a pact with Twitter to live-stream CBSN on the social service, while YouTube will be the official live-streaming partner for both conventions.
Media outlets such as C-SPAN, PBS and Fusion have also unveiled plans to use Facebook Live for some of their coverage.
In their Primary Facebook page with 8.6 million followers, ABC News said that it will have 24-hour live coverage across a variety of pages. Throughout each day and between the speeches in primetime, ABC News’ curated Facebook feed will provide live video of on-the scene interviews, protests, and other breaking news. ABC News will have correspondents in the thick of the conventions to cover it more deeply it’s ever been able to before.
“Our live-stream strategy is all about bringing users a wide variety of unique moments they may not otherwise see on television, For the conventions, in particular, Facebook Live is the perfect platform to reach and engage with our audience, delivering a 360-degree perspective of what’s happening on the ground,†said Colby Smith, ABC News VP of digital.
Facebook’s director of news and global media partnerships Andy Mitchell called the ABC News programming strategy for Facebook Live an “innovative†approach to using the platform.
Facebook launched live streaming less than a year ago and quickly it become an important tool by turning virtually anyone in the world into a correspondent.
