Sundar Pichai the CEO of search engine giant Google made a good rapport with Narendra Modi during his last visit to India, but it seems like the Google robots have a bitter relationship with the Indian Prime Minister as it has listed Modi first on the list for the image search with keywords “top 10 criminals”.
Now, a complaint filed by advocate Sushil Kumar Mishra, who is apparently a Modi fan has got a favoured ruling from the Allahabad court, which has served notice to the India-born CEO of Google and its India Head Rajan Anandan.
The petition filed by Sushil Mishra had alleged that the search engine giant defamed the Indian Prime Minister by listing him among the top 10 dreaded criminals that include criminal masterminds like Dawood Ibrahim and Hafiz Muhammad Saeed.
The petitioner claimed that earlier wrote to google asking the web giants to remove the image of Modi from its search results page, but his request went unanswered. The American Bazaar had on June 15, 2015, reported that the image of Indian Prime Minister is featured first on the list of “Top 10 criminals”.
Mishra then moved a petition before the chief judicial magistrate but it was rejected on November 3, 2015, on the grounds that it was a civil case.
The other popular Indians who came up in the search result for ‘Top 10 Criminals’ back in 2015 included Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt, but now, they have gone down in the list, but, surprisingly, Bollywood actor Salman Khan has made it to the top.
Google had in 2015 apologized for the conundrum saying “We apologize for any confusion or misunderstanding this has caused.”
Google spokesperson had also said “These results trouble us and are not reflective of the opinions of Google. Sometimes, the way images are described on the internet can yield surprising results to specific queries.”
Even though Google put up a disclaimer for the particular keyword search saying, “These results don’t reflect Google’s opinion or our beliefs; our algorithms automatically matched the query to web pages with these images,” even after one year, Modi still remain at the top of the search list for the top 10 criminals in Google.
According to Financial Express, this is not the first time that google has been dragged to court for causing such confusions.
Interestingly, the image of Modi that is currently appearing for the search term “top 10 criminals in the world” is from a 2015 story done by The Independent about Google apologizing for the appearance of Indian Prime Minister’s image in the search list for “top criminals.”
The court has posted the case for hearing on August 31.
