Twitter on Tuesday opened its blue check mark to everyone and introduced an online application process that will allow all users to get verified accounts.
Till now, twitter used to approach a user and verify his or her account and these have been limited to accounts run by organisations in various sectors, celebrities and other public figures. This allowed people to identify whether an account of public interest is authentic.
With this new update, twitter said it hopes to help more people find great, high-quality accounts to follow, and for creators and influencers-no matter where they are in the world- to easily connect with a broader audience.
Twitter’s vice president of User Services Tina Bhatnagar said that they want to make it even easier for people to find creators and influencers on twitter.
“So it makes sense for us to let people apply for verification,” she added.
The one-page form will ask the user to confirm the account that has to be verified and why it should be verified. With a verified mobile number, confirmed email address, a bio, a profile photo along with a header photo reflecting the person, a birthday, a link to a website other than twitter and tweets set as ‘Public’ in privacy settings users will able to fill the form.
Twitter might also ask users to scan and upload a legible copy of your government-issued ID to confirm your identity. Once the form has been completed, user will get an email from twitter. If the request is denied, user can again submit the form 30 days after receiving the email from the company.
Twitter first introduced verification for social media profile in 2009 and currently, there were 1.87 lakh verified accounts are there on twitter. @CDCGov, @NASAArmstrong, @KimKardashian, @Oprah, @MilwaukeePolice, @SF311 were the first twitter accounts to get the blue tick.
