Still, Flipkart remains top in terms of active users on mobile app.

Amazon India has beaten Flipkart to become the most downloaded mobile app on Google play store and Apple app store in India in the first quarter of 2016.
The data compiled by App Annie, a mobile app analytics firm shows that the Indian e-retail major is losing its ground in the competition with Amazon. The data compiled by another app tracking site SimilarWeb for past 28 days also suggest that Amazon has surpassed Flipkart in app downloads.
The recent ranking of both the apps underlines the fact that the trend is continuing in subsequent quarters also. According to The Times of India, Amazon was ranked 11th on Tuesday and Wednesday while Flipkart was at 17th and 16th position on these days respectively.
On web usage, Flipkart had lost to Amazon last year itself. The data pertaining to 2016 suggests that the gap is widening. As per the data released by SimilarWeb that combined the traffic on desktop and mobile, Amazon India was ranked 128 among the top 300 apps globally. At the same time, Flipkart was placed at 223.
However, Flipkart is much ahead of Amazon in monthly active users on the mobile app. The SimilarWeb report says that about 4.5 percent of Flipkart users launched the app on all days, but only 2.7 percent of Amazon users did the same daily.
While a Flipkart app user spends 8.25 minutes per session, Amazon users spend 6.2 minutes.
“While Flipkart has reduced its sale events and advertisements on media, Amazon continues to spend money on media and naturally tends to get more people to download the app. The Amazon app quality is also better since it is a global technology platform. Indications are that Amazon might be very close to Flipkart or already ahead in sales,” Harish HV, a partner at audit firm Grant Thornton told The Times of India.
