First Lady Michelle Obama on Monday stepped into the presidential election with an emotional endorsement of Hillary Clinton, hailing her as the only candidate who can be trusted as a role model for the nation’s children.
The first lady roused the convention hall into frenzy by Denouncing Donald Trump without ever using his name.
“In this election, there is only one person who I trust with that responsibility, only one person who I believe is truly qualified to be president of the United States,†said Michelle Obama.
“Because of Hillary Clinton, my daughters and all of our sons and daughters now take for granted that a woman can be president of the United States,†she said on the opening night of Democratic convention in Philadelphia.
Michelle Obama also portrayed a picture of a family they had to struggle with the shrill tone of national politics.
“We urge them to ignore those who question their father’s citizenship or faith,†Mrs. Obama said, a clear reference to Trump’s early demands to see President Barack Obama’s birth certificate.
“We insist that the hateful language they hear from public figures on TV does not represent the true spirit of this country, our motto is, ‘when they go low, we go high,’†the first lady said.
During her nearly eight years in the White House, Michel Obama often avoided politics, but last night her frustration with Trump’s rise was evident.
“Don’t let anyone even tell you that this country isn’t great, that somehow we need to make it great again, This right now, is the greatest country on Earth,†Mrs. Obama rejected campaign motto.
Bernie Sanders was also taking the stage later in the night and he sent urgent messages to his backers urging them to avoid protests on the convention floor.
Comedian-turned-Sen. Al Franken, a supporter of Ms. Clinton, and actress Sarah Silverman, a supporter of Mr. Sanders, made a joint appearance to promote party unity.
“I am proud to be part of Bernie’s movement,†Silverman said as the crowd roared. “And a vital part of that movement is making absolutely sure Hillary Clinton is our next president of the United States.â€
