Marriages are made in heaven, goes the popular saying. But this couple from Kolhapur took the ceremony to a different level.
Trekking enthusiast Jaydeep Jadhav, 33, married Reshma Patil, 26, while on a temporary 350-foot-long three-line ropeway. The couple and a priest hung from the three ropes overhead as they performed the rituals on Sunday over the 250-foot-deep Jakhani valley, 70km from Kolhapur.
The ceremony lasted 15 minutes and spectacle was witnessed by friends, relatives and curious onlookers.
“Ours was an arranged marriage, the ‘muhurat’ for which was on July 31. This idea came from my friends, and I liked it immediately. Reshma’s family also readily agreed for the event,” Jaydeep quoted by Times Of India.
“When I was released over the valley, I was afraid that I might fall. However, the mystical fog all around and the constant drizzle… motivated me to experience the best 15 minutes of my life,” Reshma said.
Suraj Dholi, 35-year-old professional priest was also joined them in the mid-air and started reciting the wedding mantras and completed all the rituals, except the ‘saat pheras’ around the auspicious fire. The marriage chants were heard by the gathering below via cordless microphone.
Jaydeep and Reshma were both attired in traditional Maharashtrian wedding dress and Jaydeep tied the ‘mangalsutra’ around Reshma’s neck. Both exchanged garlands, all the while hanging around.
The crowds roared their blessings across the valley clapped and cheered the newly-wedded couple and the marriage was declared solemnised.
“We wanted to create awareness about adventures sports,” Vinod Kamboj, President of Western Mountain Sports, who organized the wedding, said.
An arrangement for the mid-air ceremony was begun from Friday, and a bit of training was given to would-be-bride, Reshma. The technical support and equipment was provided by Mumbai’s Malay Adventures’ President Mahiboob Mujawar and Kolhapur’s Hillriders & Hikers Group.
The total cost came to around Rs. 50,000 and was borne by three organizations including Western Mountain Sports, Kolhapur.
