Donald Trump on Tuesday asked a woman with a crying baby to leave his rally in Ashburn, Virginia.
The GOP nominee initially suggested that he did not mind the disruption.
“Don’t worry about that baby. I love babies,” Mr Trump said. “I hear that baby crying, I like it. What a baby, what a beautiful baby. Don’t worry, don’t worry.”
But the initial showing of love didn’t last long as Trump backtracked saying he was “only kidding”.
“You can get the baby out of here,” the Republican nominee said to laughter and applause.
“Don’t worry. I, I think she really believed me that I love having a baby crying while I’m speaking. That’s OK. People don’t understand. That’s OK,” he said.
Later in the rally, another baby cried, but eventually calm down.
Later Tuesday afternoon Senator Tim Kaine, the Democratic vice-presidential nominee, picked up the baby episode and cracked a joke at Trump’s expense.
“I saw that Donald Trump kicked a crying baby out of an event earlier today, so as I’m thinking about pre-K, sometimes you wonder who the baby is, right? You wonder who the baby is,” Kaine recalled the incident as he discussed education and job training at a rally in Daytona.
In the evening, NBC News reporter Katy Tur said in a television interview that the baby was allowed to stay at the rally.
