Mob protests, set police jeep on fire.
The killing of a mother who filed a police complaint against eve-teasers who made lewd remarks to her daughter has triggered tension in Ganjam district of Odisha where angry mob gutted a police jeep.
According to reports, the locals of Odisha’s Bhabarada village in Ganjam staged a protest by blocking the roads after the news about the murder of the mother spread like wildfire. The deceased had earlier filed a police complaint against the eve-teasers who bothered her daughter.
According to eyewitnesses, while the parents were working in the field, four youth attacked them as retribution for filing the complaint in the Polasara police station.
Prakash Swain and his wife Kamala were attacked brutally by the assailants on Sunday. While Prakash managed to escape with minor injuries, his wife succumbed to mortal injuries caused by an iron rod.
Both the parents were rushed to the hospital where Kamala was declared brought dead. The death of Kamala enraged the villagers who blocked the road by placing the body of the deceased demanding proactive move from police by arresting the accused Manoj Nahak and his acquaintance.
The mob ransacked the police station and gheraoed the officers, later setting a police jeep on fire. The crowd dispersed only after the Director General of Police, Odisha, KB Singh assured stringent action against the officers. As a result of this, Sub Inspector of Polasara police station was placed under suspension.
Seven battalions of the police force had to be deployed to bring the furor under control. However, the situation remains tense in the region.
