Culprits arrested, confess to the crime.
A 12-year-old girl was gang-raped and killed by two Ola cab drivers in Kolkata on Wednesday.
The drivers, identified as Shankar Shaw and Guddu Singh, were arrested within hours after the murder happened, reported The Times of India.
The naked body of the minor was recovered from a canal in Topsia. The body has been sent for a post-mortem analysis.
According to the police, the drunken cab drivers spotted the girl, a street dweller on the pavement on Brabourne Road, in front of the Tea Board near Lalbazar police headquarters at around 4 am.
They kidnapped the girl from the street, took her to Watgunge and raped her, taking turns in the back seat. They strangulated the girl when she tried to scream and dumped her body into a canal in Topsia.
The police received the information about the kidnapping from the mother of the girl when she went to the police station to file a complaint.
“We got information that a girl was picked up in a private car. And from our traffic control we got the number of the car and alerted every police station,” a senior police officer said.
The police found the number of the car from a CCTV camera near the spot from where the girl was kidnapped.
“As we got the registration number, we found out the address of the car owner who gave the details of the drivers and within the next few hours we tracked them. After an hour’s grilling the duo confessed to the crime and took us to the spot where they had dumped her,” said the officer.
Ola suspended the cab drivers immediately after they were arrested. Ola said that they were saddened by the misbehavior of the drivers.
“We are saddened by the reports of the alleged misbehavior of a driver in Kolkata. On preliminary identification of the cab details shared by authorities, we have suspended the account associated with this cab with immediate effect. As per our records, this incident has not occurred while on the Ola platform. We will work with the authorities to share any information that will help support their investigation,” Ola said in a statement.
