The Doctor is a Pakistani national.
Gandhinagar police, on Friday, arrested a doctor and a ward boy working with Apollo hospital in Gandhinagar district of Gujarat for allegedly raping a 19-year-old patient who was admitted to the ICU where relatives of the patient are not allowed to stay back at night.
The Indian Express reported that the doctor, Rajesh Chauhan is a Pakistani national who is working in Ahmedabad on a long-term visa. The ward boy is identified as Chandrakant Vankar.
“We have arrested Chauhan and Vankar on the charges of rape. The girl alleged that both of them took turns to rape her on the night of Saturday and Sunday at the hospital where she was undergoing treatment for dengue,†said Adalaj police inspector AK Pandya.
On September 7, the girl, a dengue patient filed a complaint with the police that she was raped by a doctor and the ward boy twice. She could identify the two accused in an identification parade conducted by the police at the hospital in the presence of an executive magistrate.
The girl alleged that she was highly intoxicated before being raped. According to the statement given by the patient, she was raped first on Sunday when Dr. Rajesh Chauhan was on the night shift.
A medical examination has confirmed that the girl was raped.
“There are injury marks in the private parts of the victims. We have examined her medical condition and samples have been sent for forensic examination,†a senior police officer told The Indian Express.
The accused have been charged under section 376 (C)(D) of the Indian Penal Code for rape and sent to judicial custody until Saturday by the Gandhinagar district court.
Apollo Hospital said in a statement that they are fully cooperating with the police in the investigation.
“The ward where the incident took place has 14 staff working round-the-clock and is equipped with CCTV cameras. We are co-operating fully with the police, who are examining CCTV footages and carrying out the investigations,†read a statement issued by the hospital.
