Even though the representation of South Asians in American TV series and Hollywood films have increased over the years, there is still a wide gap between the real South Asian life and the one seen on the silver screen. Adding to this, their portrayal has been stereotyped.
Indian American filmmaker Meenakshi Ramamurthy, who came up with the idea of starting a web series called The Fob and I to represent the Indian American experience, is seeking help to fund to extend it.
The first season of The Fob and I web series tells the story of two cousins, Jisha, a Fresh off the Boat (FOB) from India and Sita, an Indian American, who share an apartment in Hollywood.
The web series, produced by Noopur Sinha, is the reflection of the Indian American experience seen through the eyes of two women who have the same skin color but vary wildly in terms of their personalities.
Those who enjoyed the first season of The Fob and I have reason to cheer as the team is coming back with season two of the web series. But this time, the creator has asked for help from fans through crowdfunding.
According to Ramamurthy, who has a short film ‘Sameer and the Giant Samosa’ as well as a series called ‘MA’s’ to her credit, The FOB and I – Season Two will look at the Indian experience in America—one that isn’t always the perfect doctor, engineer or spelling bee champ.
According to the official crowdfunding page of The Fob and I, “future episodes being a forum that opens up communication in the Indian community and empowers Indian women.”
The Fob and I have till now got funding of $10,158 from 91 supporters.
