Priyanka explained her stand in an interview to NDTV.
Actress Priyanka Chopra has apologized for wearing an “insensitive” t-shirt on the cover of a travel magazine after being slammed by her twitter followers.
The 34-year-old actress is featured on the cover of Condé Nast Traveller magazines sixth annual Indian edition, which was released on October 7, wearing a white tank top with words “refugee,” “immigrant” and “outsider” crossed out, leaving the remaining word “traveller”.
Even though the editors of the magazine explained the meaning behind Chopra’s top the actress subsequently received backlash on social media for its “insensitivity” to refugees.
“So, when we had actor Priyanka Chopra wear T-shirt we created on the cover of the sixth anniversary issue, we had a point to make. It’s about how our labelling of people as immigrants, refugees and outsiders is creating a culture of xenophobia,” the magazine said.
The Quantico actress finally explained her stand in an interview to NDTV aired on Monday and apologized, by saying that Condé Nast “specially got this (T-shirt) made and implored me to wear it. They said they were addressing xenophobia, which is a big issue that is happening.”
Priyanka said that the magazine wanted to “be ambiguous about people moving in and out, whether it’s by choice or not by choice-so, travelling. Their idea was that, and I bought into it, I guess. I’m really really apologetic about the fact that so many sentiments were hurt. I mean, that was definitely not the reason. And me, of all the people! I’m someone who always stands for no labels. I’m someone who always stands for people being able to do what they have to do when they have to it without being put in a box. So, I was very affected. I felt really, really horrible. I think… that was never the intension.”
“The point the magazine wanted to make was actually something good,” she added.
