Following the success of Azz Ansari’s comedy web series ‘Masters of None’, Disney’s Freedom has ordered the pilot of a comedy series called ‘Brown Girls’.
Brown Girls is directed/produced by Shilpi Roy who conceived two seasons of the web series “Hipsterhood” which won “Best Comedy Web Series” in the LA Weekly Web Awards and was nominated for “Best Returning Series” at the IAWTV awards.
Brown Girls is written by Iranian-American producer Nastaran Dibai, whose ‘Funny In Farsi’, a movie on the experiences of Iranian-American immigrants directed by Barry Sonnen, was shelved.
Brown Girls centers around the relationship between an Indian American girl named Rimmi, who is an aspiring beauty vlogger, and Devi, a recently emigrated young woman from India.
When Rimmi and Devi meet, they fight over their different views on modern life. But over the next few days, they realize that they both have something to learn from one another.
Freeform Executive VP Karey Burke said, in a statement: “We love this odd couple comedy not just because it is a sophisticated, funny show but we are thrilled to tell a story about part of the American experience that isn’t really on TV today.”
