Rajeev K. Gupta said his mother was ‘sufferingâ€.

In a heinous act, a 55-year-old Indian American man, Rajeev K. Gupta, was arrested Sunday after he killed his 92-year-old mother Kapoori Devi by strangling her with a cell phone charger, in El Paso, Texas. Gupta told police he killed his mother because she was “suffering†because of medical conditions, according to court documents.
Police found Devi’s body in her home in east El Paso, in the 3600 block of Grand Bahamas Drive, said a police spokesman, reported KFox14. Police said the incident was reported around 11:30 a.m.
Gupta was charged with murder and booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility on a bond of $1 million.
Gupta allegedly told a fire-medical dispatcher that “he choked his mother to death with a phone charger cord,” according to court documents filed by a police detective obtained by the El Paso Times.
People who live in the neighborhood near Loop 375 and Montana Avenue said it’s normally a quiet, gated community and a lot of military families live there.
When paramedics arrived at the home, Gupta allegedly told them that he has just killed his mother because she was suffering from medical complications, documents stated.
When police arrived, Gupta got up from a recliner, told officers that he was sorry and extended his arms so that officers could handcuff him, documents stated. He was handcuffed and sat down in a patrol car.
Police found Devi with no signs of life on her bed with a white cellphone charger cable wrapped tightly around her neck, according to court documents.
When questioned by a homicide detective at El Paso Police Headquarters, Gupta allegedly confessed to killing his mother and said that “both he and the victim were suffering and were not happy.”
This is the 16th murder this year in El Paso, compared to 12 at the same time in 2015.
