Panic even before the wall is built.
The Republican camp is celebrating the victory of Donald Trump and Democrats are taking stock of what went wrong in what appeared a few weeks back an easy sail for Hillary, to the White House. But there is another group that kept a close tab of the election result: Mexican immigrants.
As news channels announced Trump as the President-elect of the United States, Mexican immigrants were googling “how to get Canadian visa†as Trump during his campaign had said he will build a wall between the two countries or deport millions of Mexican immigrants, reported The New York Times.
As Trump makes his way to the White House, Mexican immigrants are thinking of how to make their way out of the US to avoid the humiliation at the hands of someone who hates them to the core.
The Peso fell to nearly a 20-year low after Trump was elected as the president, as there is a general sentiment that the results will shake the carefully cemented cross-border relationship. There is also a greater fear among investors that the US elections will begin a turbulent financial for Mexico, that is greatly depended on American economic policy, both in terms of trade and remittances.
Mexico has been watching the campaigns of both Hillary Clinton and Trump with amusement and fear, as they knew the outcome of the election would greatly affect its economy, migration and even its state of mind.
“This election reminded us of the bad image Mexico has in the U.S.,†said Jesús Silva-Herzog, a columnist and professor at the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education in Mexico. “It has also served as a mirror in which we have painfully seen our reflection.â€
“We will not have to wait for the presidential baton to be passed to feel the devastating effects, not only in economic terms but also the existential crisis it will cause,†he added.
Like popular belief, Mexico also expected Hillary’s victory over Trump but their hopes went haywire as Trump came out successful.
Mexico, which is already suffering from a stagnant economy and worsening violence, has received a double blow with the victory of Trump, who has been hostile and disrespectful of Mexican immigrants.
