Balwinder Malhotra had promised to spend money for his family.
An Indian-origin man has been sent to jail for six months for beating his wife and their five-year-old child who tried to stop him. Balvinder Malhotra, 30, had won a lottery worth 70,000 pounds in January 2016 and had promised to use the same for his family.
According to a PTI report, Malhotra had promised to spend the prize money to make a “great year for his family.” He along with his wife Hardeep Kaur, 28, had celebrated the win and snapped a photo with his wife.
But, Malhotra punched wife Kaur three times and their five-year-old child in the face during a party at their home in Hounslow, West London. They had got into a scuffle during a picnic.
“These are significant injuries. This crosses the custody threshold by a mile,” District Judge Debbie Wright told him at Uxbridge Magistrates Court. The court also noted that Malhotra has booze problems and gave his mom a bloody nose earlier.
Along with serving the jail term, he must pay his two victims £1,000 each.
“You’ve clearly got the means to pay. He had a lottery win,” District Judge Debbie Wright said.
Malhotra, who is now living with his parents, hasn’t seen his wife after the attack in June. He had bought a small shop after winning the lottery.
“When I told my wife she burst into tears of joy. I used to have a shop but we lost this when big retailers moved in. This win will give me the boost I need. Looks like 2016 is going to be a great year for our little family,” he said after the win.
The court heard that Malhotra has 87,000 pounds in the bank and a BMW car.
