First Indian to claim a gold medal in the annual championship.
An eight-year-old schoolgirl from Kashmir has won the World Kickboxing Championship held in Italy, in the sub-junior category. Tajamul Islam, who hails from Bandipora district in Jammu and Kashmir, beat her rival from the US to win the title.
Islam is the first Indian player from sub-junior category to win a gold medal in the championship held in Andria, Italy. Boxers from 90 countries participated at the five-day championship, reported ANI.
“In five days, Tajamul Islam won six games,” said her coach Master Fasil Ali.
A class 2 student of the Army Goodwill School in Bandipora district, Islam has made Kashmir, which is reeling under agitations by separatists and terror attacks, proud by bringing the world champion title to the state. She received support from the Kickboxing Federation of India to participate in the championship.
“She (Islam) has created history by winning a gold medal in the game at the age of eight,” said PDP leader Waheed Parra, who is also J&K State Sports Council secretary.
Last year, Islam had won a gold medal in the sub-junior category in National Kickboxing Championship, held in New Delhi.
