The accused and her accomplices are on the run.
One person was killed and four injured in a celebratory fire by a self-proclaimed god-woman during an engagement ceremony in Karnal, Haryana, on Tuesday.
The deceased has been identified as the groom’s maternal aunt Sunita Rani. The Times of India reported that the condition of injured Amarjit Singh, Vinod, Anil and 11-year-old Manasvi is critical.
In a video that surfaced on Tuesday, Sadhvi Deva Thakur, the vice-president of All India Hindu Mahasabha is seen firing shots using guns along with some others during the ceremony. She went to attend the ring exchange ceremony of Vikrant Singh, who is her follower, of Sant Nagar in Karnal, held at Savitri Marriage Palace in Karnal along with seven accomplices.
“People were dancing. She asked the DJ to play her song saying she wanted to dance and shoot with it,” a guest told NDTV.
“She pulled out her revolver and fired several rounds. Her aides even reloaded the weapon and she fired again,” he said.
The requests of the bride and groom to stop firing went in vain.
“As soon as the firing started, we called the police as this is not allowed. In the meantime, the pistol of one of them got stuck. While rectifying it, a shot was fired causing injuries to those present,” Sumit Bhatia, manager of the venue, told Indian Express.
Thakur and her associates fled the place immediately after people were shot. The police have registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, attempt to murder and under Arms Act against Thakur and her associates. Special teams have been formed to catch the accused who are on the run.
“There were various kinds of weapons. Investigations suggested one of the associates was carrying a .12 bore gun which developed some snag. While fixing the fault, the person had kept the fingers on the trigger and the gun went off as he closed the chamber. The pellets hit Sunita and others,” SP Pankaj Nain said.
