Jayati Modi wore a three-piece Vivienne Westwood gown.
Jayati Modi, the daughter of industrialist Samir Modi, was one of the debutants to the prestigious annual debutante ball, le Bal, held in Paris recently. She was one of the 20 girls invited from across the world to “the only debutante ball in the world by-invitation only.”
“I got a random email from my aunt in January saying that somebody very close to Ophelie had asked her if I would be interested in attending the ball. I was sitting in Goa with friends at that time and thought it was a New Year’s prank. Later I spoke with my aunt and told her I would love to do it, especially after finding out that it had a great charity cause too,” Modi told Lifestyle.
The 21-year-old wore a three-piece Vivienne Westwood gown, in shades of orange and pink as she was paired exclusively with the design house for her gown.
“I loved it because it was different, not the typical dress you’d imagine for a ball, and yet it was regal in its own way,” she told Vogue in an interview.
A student of entrepreneurship and film at Brandeis University in Boston, Jayati shot to fame with her appearance in Karan Johar’s movie Gippi in 2013.
“I wanted it to be glamorous and chic but fun as well; not something people would expect,” said Modi.
Though participants are selected through recommendation, they have to fill up a questionnaire to make sure that the participant is an appropriate candidate.
“They want a group of girls who are empowered, can make a change and are willing to do things to give back to society,” she said.
The annual event started in 1992 by Ophélie Renouard, sees 20 young women and 20 men from renowned families across the globe gather at the Peninsula Hotel in Paris.
